Virgin Mary the Unexpected Joy
The icon of Unexpected Joy is hence iconographed : in a room, the Virgin Mary is depicted to hold Christ with her left arm while a young worshiper knees before her. According to the Christian tradition, with this icon many young men have been healed from pain and suffering.
In the scriptures of Saint Demetrios bishop of Rostof, the sinful young man in the icon was kneeling before the icon of the Immaculate Virgin Mary before he committed his sins. Suddenly, as he sees blood coming out of young Christ’s wounds at the feet, hands and ribs, terrified he asks the Virgin Mary who is culpable for this and the Virgin Mary replies "You and all sinful are responsible because for every human sin, my Son is crucified over and over again". Only then, realizing the deepness and consequences of his sin, the sinful young man started to pray in tears, begging for forgiveness.
The Unexpected Joy is celebrated on January 25th and on May 1st.
